The senior climatologist with Environment Canada says we’re in for a warmer than normal summer.
Dave Phillips says the only thing standing between us and those warmer days is cool ocean waters, and they should warm up soon.
Phillips tells The Hawk meteorologists in our country and the US are on the same page.
“The American models (and) Canadian models are saying for, really, the Maritimes- and certainly for Nova Scotia- that we think it will be warmer than normal,” he says. “When the Americans are saying the same thing, different models saying the same outcome, then you always have a little bit more confidence that the forecast is going to be right.”
Phillips says precipitation is more of a question, but it will likely be close to historical averages.
He says the water in the ground now, combined with the upcoming warmer weather, will be good for farmers.
“This time of the year, you’re going into the really active growing season, and the precipitation has been less, and farmers are wishing for more rain,” he says. “That’s clearly not the case- everything’s well-watered.”
Phillips says warm, dry sunny days are what farmers need now, and his models indicate that’s what they- and we- will get.
Summer officially started Friday.
