A long-time municipal councillor and warden in Antigonish Co. has died.
Hyland Fraser died after a battle with ALS Friday.
Fraser represented District 7 (Heatherton-Afton) for 15 years, serving as warden for 12 of those years- from 1986 to 1998.
Councillors observed a moment of silence at the start of February’s regular meeting Tuesday night.
After, Owen McCarron, the current warden of Antigonish Co., said he’ll remember Fraser’s great personality.
“He always had a great smile,” he said. “He also had a diverse background, growing up in Frasers Grant, member of a pretty good-sized family, farming background- common sense prevailed all the time.”
McCarron, who was first elected to District 6 (St. Andrews) in 1994, spent four years on council with Fraser.
He said he brought a lot to the table.
“Hyland was certainly a great contributor to our council, and to our county,” he said. “He was well-respected across municipalities across the province- he was on UNSM executive.”
Fraser left municipal politics to run provincially in 1998; he was elected the MLA for Antigonish as part of a minority Liberal government, then lost to Tory Angus MacIsaac in 1999.
He moved to Alberta in 2006; he became an ordained deacon in 2014.
