Mulroney officially opens namesake building

A former prime minster was in Antigonish to cut the ribbon at a new university building bearing his name and housing a replica of his former office.

Brian Mulroney, a StFX class of 1959 alumnus, spoke during the grand opening ceremonies for the university’s new Mulroney Hall Wednesday.

After, Mulroney said reps from other schools wanted the exhibit.

“A number of universities in central Canada, very large ones, came to see me and asked if they could put my stuff there and I said ‘Well I didn’t go to these universities- I went to StFX’,” he said. “I came down here when I was 16, and then I came back to run for Member of Parliament here in Central Nova, (which) got me launched into the House of Commons- Nova Scotia really made me as Prime Minister.”

Mulroney said that’s why he fundraised to build Mulroney Hall and support the new Brian Mulroney Institute of Government.

He said he still remembers his first day at StFX.

“When I arrived on the campus, by God I thought I was in Las Vegas,” he said. “All kinds of people running around, things to do, I said ‘Boy this is hilarious, this is going to be wonderful’- and it was.”

Mulroney Hall opened to students at the start of the 2019-20 academic year.
