Antigonish town and county team up on hazardous waste disposal

Antigonish Co.’s warden says municipal officials have responded to residents’ request with a new permanent location to drop off hazardous materials.

Town and county officials have signed a memorandum of understanding to split the cost of a permanent facility at the Beech Hill landfill.

Antigonish Co. Warden Owen McCarron says it will be in addition to the annual household hazardous waste event.

“People collect things throughout the year and its a long time to expect people to wait for a one time drop off,” he says. “We have brought in a container and we’re going to actually use that as the area to store and house the materials, and then throughout the course of the year, as things build up, then we’ll bring appropriate disposal people to take care of the stuff that builds up.”

McCarron says residents wanted more chances to remove the materials from their homes.
