Hummingbirds have arrived in Nova Scotia

Spring migration for hummingbirds has begun and they have already been spotted in Nova Scotia. Ruby-throated humming birds are the ones that visit us each year.

You can report a sighting here.

Did you know that their winds beat up to 55 times a second & they are the only bird species that can hover and fly backwards or even upside down?

A hummingbird can’t walk or hop, but can shuffle with its extremely short legs, which are not very strong.

They get around too! They can travel as much as 37 kms in one day & much further if they are crossing a large body of water and they are fast! Top speed can be up to 48km/hr!

If you feed hummingbirds, don’t bother with the store bought food, it isn’t needed and contains dyes.

Clean your feeder and add a sugar and water mixture. 1 part sugar/4 parts water is great! Some people boil the mixture but I’ve found that isn’t required. Just make sure you clean your feeders on a regular basis!
