Officials in another local municipality are taking steps toward e-voting for the upcoming elections.
Municipal elections are scheduled to take place across the province Oct. 17.
Inverness Co. councillors passed first reading of their Internet and phone voting bylaw during July’s regular municipal council meeting Thursday afternoon.
Betty Ann MacQuarrie, the warden of Inverness Co., tells The Hawk there are concerns with how ongoing telecommunication issues in the region will affect voting.
“It probably won’t be possible for some, unless they move to another area to do their voting,” she says. “There will be some difficulties along the way.”
MacQuarrie says there will be advance polling days, and they will still have paper ballots.
She says they can’t have someone unable to vote because of bad Internet.
“It is difficult for Inverness Co. to be able to hope that the Internet will be working properly for everybody on that day.”
MacQuarrie says the goal is to get the best voter turnout possible.
