Kelloway estimates 40 per cent chance of election call

The federal Liberals are set to unveil their latest throne speech Wednesday.

That means there’s a chance for opposition MPs to topple members of the minority government.

Cape Breton-Canso’s Liberal MP says he thinks there’s about a 40 per cent chance Parliament will dissolve following the speech from the throne.

Mike Kelloway tells The Hawk he doesn’t expect it will happen.

“A lot of folks on many sides of the aisle would prefer not for an election to happen, but are prepared if it does.”

Kelloway says that includes the governing Liberals.

He says members of minority governments are always watching out for an election.

“If it is called, we’re prepared to put the case to the country in terms of what this government has done over the past 11 months,” he says. “Primarily, (our) response to COVID-19.”

Kelloway says politics are unpredictable, and a surprise alliance could always bring down the Liberals, and trigger an election.
