Late doctor was “community’s backbone”- warden

The warden of the Municipality of the District of Guysborough says a family doctor who passed away was the backbone of the community.

Dr. Anita Foley, who practiced medicine in Guysborough Co. for 42 years until she retired in 2018, passed away after a battle with cancer in May.

Councillors received a letter of thanks from her family members for their support following her death at June’s regular meeting Wednesday afternoon; municipal officials live-streamed her funeral to Chedabucto Place Performance Centre, with its additional seating, to accommodate the large number of mourners.

After the meeting, Vernon Pitts, Guysborough’s warden, said Foley will never be replaced.

“In all true essence, she was the backbone of our community- she was a lady (who) came for a few months, and she ended up working her whole career here,” he said. “She was a very compassionate lady, very caring, very giving- the lady had true feelings.”

The new wing of the Guysborough Memorial Hospital, which opened in 2016, is named the “Dr. Anita Foley Health Services Centre” in her honour.
