Lobster industry rep says season went well

A spokesperson for a local lobster fishing group says their season went pretty well.

The 2019 season for many lobster fishermen in the Quad Counties wrapped up Wednesday; it was extended three days due to high winds at the start of the season in April.

Duane Boudreau, the president of the Gulf Nova Scotia Bonafide Fishermen’s Association, says other work commitments meant some of their members had to finish up June 30, as originally scheduled.

Boudreau tells The Hawk catches seemed the same- or slightly above- the 2018 season.

“We don’t have the final numbers yet- we probably won’t see those until some time in December or January,” he says. “I think, from most reports, everyone seemed to have a pretty good season.”

Boudreau says their costs were up compared to 2018.

He says a bump in prices helped.

“We had, obviously, an increase in some of our expenses with bait and fuel being more expensive than (2018),” he says. “The price was up a little at the end, so that helped offset that.”

Boudreau says final prices were $5.50/pound for canners and $6.75/pound for markets.

He says they’ll continue to focus on safety as they plan for the 2020 season.
