Local First Nation exploring building new school

A local first nation is looking at building their own school.

Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation Chief Paul Prosper says they have voted on building their own school before.

Prosper tells The Hawk the results of that vote didn’t show enough support for the idea.

“We have since done a number of surveys, focus groups, and things of that nature,” he says. “It appears that there is a certain consensus within the band.”

Prosper says, now that there’s popular support, they’ve begun conversations with the Mi’kmaw Education Authority.

He says they’ve also started a feasibility study into where they could construct the new building.

“At least starting small with a school, maybe P-3 or something to that effect,” he says. “Seeing how it goes and see what comes about in the future.”

Prosper says they already have about half the money they’ll need to build the school.

He says they would look to put together the rest of the required funding next year and hope to move to the construction phase in 2020 or 2021.
