Local sports preview (Friday)

There are a pair of games on the local sports schedule.

The Cabot Highlanders host the Fundy Thunder in the Nova Scotia U16 AAA Hockey League.

The Highlanders (4-4-0), who swept their first two games since play resumed, are fifth in the eight-team league with eight points, two points behind the two teams tied for third, and two points ahead of the sixth-place Voyageurs; the Thunder (7-1-1) are in top spot with 15 points.

Puck drop at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre is 7:30 p.m.

It’s the first of three games in as many days- and the first half of a home-and-home series- for the Highlanders, who are in Truro to take on the Thunder Saturday afternoon, then travel to Bedford to play the Basin Armada Sunday afternoon.

The Halifax Mooseheads remain in PEI to play River Deny’s Colten Ellis, Antigonish’s Sean Stewart and the Charlottetown Islanders in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League.

The Mooseheads (7-7-5), who beat Charlottetown 5-2 on the road Wednesday night and have won two of their first three since play resumed, are third in the six-team Maritimes Division with 19 points, a point behind Acadie-Bathurst for second, and five points ahead of Cape Breton and Saint John, who are tied for fourth; the Islanders (14-3-0) are in top spot with 28 points.

Charlottetown leads the season series 4-2.
