Local sports preview (Friday)

The Cape Breton West Islanders will try to stave off elimination when their Nova Scotia Major Midget Hockey League playoff series with the Cole Harbour Wolfpack shifts to Port Hood for game three.

The Wolfpack won the first two games in the best-of-five, second-round series in Cole Harbour March 16-17.

Puck drop at the Al MacInnis Sports Centre is 7 p.m.

An Islanders’ win means the series remains in Port Hood for game four Saturday afternoon; a loss, and their season is done.

The Northern Selects have a chance to repeat as Nova Scotia Female Midget AAA Hockey League champions when they host Halifax in game three of the league final.

The Selects won the opening two games in the best-of-five, second-round series in New Glasgow March 16-17.

Game time is 4:45 p.m.

A Selects’ win sends them to Atlantics in Bathurst April 4-7; a loss extends the series to game four in Halifax Saturday.

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams open their respective first-round playoff series.

The Halifax Mooseheads host the Quebec Remparts at Scotiabank Centre at 7 p.m.

The Mooseheads (49-15-4), who won three of their last four to close out the regular season, finished first in the Eastern Conference with 102 points, and are ranked eighth in the country; the Remparts (27-28-13), who won both games in the season series against Halifax, were eighth with 67 points.

St. Andrews’ Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles visit the Charlottetown Islanders at 7:30 p.m.

The Screaming Eagles (40-22-6), who finished the regular season with three straight wins, ended up fifth in the East with 86 points, a point behind the fourth-place Islanders (40-21-7), who had a 5-4 edge in the nine-game season series between the Maritimes Division opponents.

Both series remain in the same cities for games two Saturday night.
