Local sports preview (Friday)

The StFX men’s hockey team travels to Charlottetown for AUS action.

They play the UPEI Panthers.

The X-Men (5-4-2), with one win in their last four, are fourth in the seven-team conference with 12 points, two points behind Saint Mary’s for third, and three points ahead of fifth-place Moncton; the Panthers (2-6-2) are tied for sixth with six points.

The teams have met once so far in their five-game season series- StFX won 9-2 in Antigonish in September.

Game time is 7 p.m.

 

Both of the local Nova Scotia Junior League teams are on the ice.

The Strait Pirates travel to Springhill to take on the Cumberland Co. Blues at 7:30 p.m.

The Pirates (7-2-3), who have lost back-to-back games, are third in the six-team Sid Rowe Division with 17 points, two points behind Antigonish for second, and 10 points ahead of Eskasoni and Pictou Co., the two teams tied for fourth; the Blues (1-11-0), with just one win in their first 12 games of the 2019-20 season, are last with two points.

It’s the second game in the four-game season series between the teams- the Pirates won the first 7-4 in Port Hawkesbury in October.

The Antigonish Bulldogs host the Pictou Co. Scotians at the Antigonish Arena at 7:30 p.m.

The Bulldogs (9-2-1), winners of five of their last six, are second in the Sid Rowe Division with 19 points, two points behind the Miners for top spot, and two points ahead of the third-place Pirates; the Scotians (3-7-1) are tied for fourth with seven points.

Antigonish has won the first two games in the four-game season series.

It’s the first of back-to-back game for the Bulldogs, who visit Brookfield Saturday afternoon.

 

There’s one game in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.

The Richmond Academy Hurricanes visit the Inverness-Baddeck Academy Rebels.

The Hurricanes (1-1-1) are fourth in the five-team league with three points, a point behind Eskasoni for third, and three points ahead of the last-place Rebels (0-2-0), who have lost their first two games of the season.

It’s the first game in the four-game season series between the teams.

Puck drop at the Victoria Highland Civic Centre is 7:30 p.m.

 

The Halifax Mooseheads play the first of back-to-back home games in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League when they host the Drummondville Voltigeurs.

The Mooseheads (8-9-1), losers of six of their last seven, are eighth in the 10-team Eastern Conference with 17 points, two points behind Baie-Comeau for seventh, and four points ahead of ninth-place Saint John; the Voltigeurs (13-7-0) are third in the eight-team Western Conference with 26 points.

It’s the second and final regular season game between the teams- Halifax won the first 5-1 in Drummondville in October.

Puck drop at Scotiabank Centre is 7 p.m.

Halifax hosts Pomquet’s Logan Chisholm and Acadie-Bathurst Saturday night.

 

The StFX men’s soccer team starts play on the consolation side of the bracket at the 2019 U Sports championship in Montreal.

The X-Men, who lost 2-0 to Carleton in their quarterfinal Thursday, take on the UBC Thunderbirds, who lost their quarterfinal to UQTR, in the consolation semi-finals.

Game time is 11 a.m.

The winner advances to the consolation final, the fifth-place game, Saturday; the loser is eliminated.

 

The StFX basketball teams play their 2019-20 AUS home openers.

They host the UPEI Panthers.

The X-Men (0-1) lost their 2019-20 season opener to Dalhousie in Halifax Saturday night; the Panthers (1-1) split their first two games.

The X-Women (0-1) lost their first and only game to Dalhousie on the road Saturday; the Panthers (2-0) are undefeated.

It’s the first in the four-game season series between the teams.

The women start at 6 p.m.; the men tip off at 8 p.m.

The teams play again in Antigonish Saturday night.

 

Five members of the StFX football team have received some conference recognition.

Defensive end Alex Fedchun, halfback Cole Virtanen, centre Jonathan Zamora, tackle Gregor MacKellar, and punter Keiran Burnham have been named AUS all-stars for the 2019 season.

The X-Men (2-6) finished last following the regular season, and missed the playoffs.
