Local sports preview (Friday)

The Strait Pirates finish off the 2019-20 regular season in the Nova Scotia Junior Hockey League on the road.

They’re in Springhill to square off with the Cumberland Co. Blues.

The Pirates (18-9-4), who have one win in their last three, are third in the six-team Sid Rowe Division with 40 points, seven points behind Antigonish for second, and 17 points ahead of fourth-place Eskasoni; the last-place Blues (5-22-2) have 12 points.

The Pirates have won two of the first three games in the four-game season series against Cumberland Co., including Tuesday’s 6-2 win in the first half of the home-and-home series between the teams in Port Hawkesbury.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

 

The Cabot Highlanders travel to Truro to take on the Fundy Thunder in the Nova Scotia Minor Midget AAA Hockey League.

The Highlanders (11-13-4), who have lost three straight and four of the last five, are sixth in the eight-team league with 26 points, two points behind the Admirals for fifth, and 11 points ahead of the seventh-place Thunder (6-17-3).

The teams have meet three times in their five-game season series; the Highlanders have won two of those first three games.

Game time is 7:30 p.m.

 

The NSSAF Highland Region Division 2 hockey tournament continues at the Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre.

The five teams from the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League are all taking part- the host SAERC Saints, the Dalbrae Dragons, the Richmond Academy Hurricanes, the Eskasoni Warriors and the Inverness-Baddeck Academy Rebels.

The tournament opened with a pair of games Thursday; there are four more games Friday.

SAERC squares off with Eskasoni at 11:30 a.m., Inverness-Baddeck Academy plays Richmond Academy at 1 p.m., Dalbrae takes on Eskasoni at 2:30 p.m., and SAERC meets Inverness-Baddeck Academy at 4:30 p.m.

The round-robin portion of the tournament wraps up with four more games Saturday; the semi-final and championship games are Sunday.

The Cape Breton Eagles play the first of two homes games in as many nights in the Quebec Major Junior Hockey League when they host the Saint John Sea Dogs.

The Eagles (35-17-3), losers of two of the last three, are fourth in the 10-team Eastern Conference with 73 points, five points behind Rimouski for third, and 14 points ahead of fifth-place Charlottetown; the Sea Dogs (27-28-1) are sixth with 55 points.

Cape Breton has won four of the first five games in the nine-game season series between the Maritimes Division opponents.

Puck drop at Centre 200 in Sydney is 7 p.m.

The Eagles host River Denys’ Colten Ellis and Rimouski Saturday night.

 

The StFX basketball teams are home for their final AUS regular season games.

They host the Cape Breton Capers.

The X-Men (10-9), losers of back-to-back games and three of their last four, are third in the eight-team conference with 32 points, two points behind UNB for second, and two points ahead of fourth-place Saint Mary’s; the Capers (8-11) are tied with Acadia for fifth with 20 points.

StFX won the first game in the two-game season series between the teams 117-116 in double-overtime in Sydney Feb. 1.

The X-Women (3-16), who have lost three in a row and nine of their last 10 and are eliminated from playoff contention, are seventh in their eight-team conference with six points, 18 points behind Saint Mary’s for sixth, and two points ahead of last-place Dalhousie; the Capers (8-11) are fifth with 26 points.

Cape Breton won the first game in the two-game season series between the teams 72-64 in overtime in Sydney Feb. 1.

Both games are worth four points in the conference standings.

The women tip off at 6 p.m.; the men get underway at 8 p.m.

 

The StFX track and field teams are in New Brunswick.

The X-Men and X-Women are taking part in the AUS championship in Saint John.

The competition opens Friday; it wraps up Saturday.
