Bernard murder suspect elects judge and jury trial

A suspect charged in the murder of Cassidy Bernard has had a 5-day preliminary inquiry scheduled.

20-year-old Dwight Austin Isadore of Wagmatcook elected a judge and jury supreme court trial in Port Hawkesbury Friday.

Bernard’s friends and family gathered in the courtroom; the judge took a moment to address their concerns about a venue change.

She said only a supreme court can hear a murder trial, and supreme court doesn’t sit in Wagmatcook.

However, she did say preliminary hearings could be held there.

Isadore faces a count of second-degree murder in relation to Bernard’s death, and two counts of abandoning a child.

The 22-year-old mother was found dead in a We’koqma’q home in October 2018, her infant twins were found by her side.

The preliminary inquiry will run from July 15 to 21 in Wagmatcook.
