Local sports preview (Saturday)

The StFX women’s hockey team kicks off a weekend AUS trip through New Brunswick.

They meet the Mount Allison Mounties in Sackville.

The X-Women (14-5-3), winners of three straight, are second in the eight-team conference with 31 points; they’ve already locked up a playoff spot, and are ranked fifth in the country.

The Mounties (3-18-0) are last with six points.

It’s the fourth and final regular season game between the teams; StFX won the first three by a combined score of 15-1.

Game time is 2 p.m.

The X-Women face UNB in Fredericton Sunday afternoon.

 

The Novas are on home ice for a pair of games in the Nova Scotia Major Bantam Hockey League.

They host the South Shore Lumberjacks.

The Novas (12-12-1), who have lost two of their last three, are seventh in the 12-team league with 25 points, two points behind Pictou Co. for sixth, and a point ahead of eighth-place East Hants; the Lumberjacks (12-6-6), who have won the first two games in the three-game season series, are fourth with 30 points.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 5 p.m.

The Novas host Halifax in Antigonish Sunday afternoon.

 

There are a pair of games in the Antigonish Rural League.

The St. Croix Angels take on the Heatherton Warriors at 7 p.m.; the County Outlaws play the Pleasantdale Panthers at 8:45 p.m.

Both games are at the Antigonish Arena.

 

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are on the road to face Maritimes Division opponents.

St. Andrews’ Declan Smith and the Cape Breton Screaming Eagles play their second game against the Charlottetown Islanders in as many nights.

The Screaming Eagles won Friday night’s game between the teams in PEI.

The Halifax Mooseheads meet Pleasant Valley’s Jacob Hudson, Antigonish’s Jake and Sean Stewart and the Moncton Wildcats.

The Mooseheads (32-10-3), winners of three straight, are fourth in the 18-team league with 67 points, and are ranked eighth in the country; the Wildcats (26-15-6) have 58 points.

Halifax has won four of the first five games in the nine-game season series between the teams.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.

 

The StFX basketball teams remain in Fredericton for more AUS action against the UNB Varsity Reds.

The teams met in Fredericton Friday night- UNB won both games.

It’s the fourth and final regular season games between the teams.

The women tip off at 6 p.m.; the men get underway at 8 p.m.

 

The StFX track and field teams are in Montreal for their second day of competition.

The X-Men and X-Women are taking part in the McGill Team Challenge.

Competition got underway Friday; it wraps up Saturday.
