Local sports preview (Wednesday)

The Dr. J.H. Gillis boys hockey team is on home ice in the Northern Nova Scotia High School Hockey League.

They host the Hants East Tigers.

The Royals (3-3-1), winless in their last three regular season games, and Tigers (3-2-0) are tied for second in the five-team with nine points, 10 points behind Northumberland for top spot, and three points ahead of fourth-place North Nova.

It’s the second game in the four-game season series between the teams; Dr. J.H. Gillis won the first 4-2 at home in October.

Puck drop at the Antigonish Arena is 6:30 p.m.

 

There’s one game in the Cape Breton West High School Hockey League.

The Dalbrae Dragons visit the Eskasoni Warriors.

The Dragons (6-0-2), who have yet to lose in regulation after their first eight regular season games, are in top spot in the five-team league with 19 points, two points up on second-place SAERC; the Warriors (1-6-1), with one win in their first eight, are fourth with four points, 10 points behind Richmond Academy for third, and a point ahead of last-place Inverness-Baddeck Academy.

Game time is 7 p.m.

 

The province’s two Quebec Major Junior Hockey League teams are on the road to face Maritimes Division opponents.

The Cape Breton Eagles visit Pomquet’s Logan Chisholm and the Acadie-Bathurst Titan.

The Eagles (17-11-2), winners of two of their last three, are fifth in the 10-team Eastern Conference with 36 points, four points behind Charlottetown for fourth, and five points ahead of the two teams tied for sixth; the Titan (4-20-6) are last in the conference- and the entire league- with 14 points.

Chisholm has 14 points (6 goals, 8 assists) in his first 30 games of the season for Acadie-Bathurst.

Cape Breton has won the first two games in the eight-game season series between the teams.

The Halifax Mooseheads travel to PEI to play the Charlottetown Islanders.

The Mooseheads (14-13-3), losers of two of their last three, are tied with Baie-Comeau for sixth in the Eastern Conference with 31 points, five points behind Cape Breton for fifth, and two points ahead of eighth-place Saint John; the Islanders (18-11-4) are fourth with 40 points.

Charlottetown has won three of the first four games in the nine-game season; it’s the first half of a home-and-home series, with the teams meeting again in Halifax Friday night.

Both games get underway at 7 p.m.
