Six Quad Counties wilderness areas are part of 20 set to be protected by the province.
Department of Lands and Forestry officials say 60-day consultations will go ahead for four sites in Antigonish Co. and two more sites are intended for protection, both in Inverness Co.
The following proposed sites will go through formal consultation:
-Dunns Beach Provincial Park, Antigonish Co.
-Eigg Mountain – James River Wilderness Area (expansion), Antigonish Co.
-Monks Head Provincial Park, Antigonish Co.
-Pomquet Beach Provincial Park, Antigonish Co.
Additional sites intended for protection:
-Glendyer Nature Reserve, Inverness Co.
-Les Caps Nature Reserve, Inverness Co.
Derek Mombourquette, Lands and Forestry Minister, says it remains a government priority to protect the province’s wilderness areas.
“Nova Scotia has some of the most amazing and unique provincial parks in the country,” he says. “Designating these new parks will ensure visitors and Nova Scotians will be able to enjoy their beauty and biodiversity for generations to come.”
Officials say, altogether, the new and expanded protected sites will bring the province up to its 13 per cent land protection goal.
