Mayor says property assessments shouldn’t be going up

Representatives with Property Valuation Services Corp. made a visit to Mulgrave to explain increasing property assessments in the town.

They made a presentation at March’s regular town council meeting Monday night.

Town councillors requested they come following a number of calls from residents concerned by increasing property assessments and, as a result, their taxes.

After the meeting, Ralph Hadley, Mulgrave’s mayor, said it doesn’t make sense for assessments to go up in the town.

“We figured that our assessment would be a lot lower- we don’t have a bank, we don’t have a store,” he said. “We lost all of our businesses in our town, even our school (in 2018).”

Hadley said PVSC reps explained assessments are calculated using the housing market, with nearby communities as comparisons.

He said it doesn’t make sense to use a nearby town, given how different Mulgrave is from the other towns in the area.
