Mayor says recent flooding didn’t result in much damage

Antigonish‘s mayor says the town avoided significant damage in a recent storm.

Columbus Field flooded during the Easter weekend storm.

After April’s regular council meeting Monday night, Laurie Boucher, the mayor of the town, said they’re prepared for flooding in that area at this point.

“Columbus Field is almost a natural overflow, so the water comes in, then it ebbs and it flows,” she said. “There wasn’t a whole lot of damage- we’re kind of ready for it down there.”

The area has been prone to flooding for years.

Boucher said water levels subsided on their own, and town officials didn’t have to take any action.

“We’ve discovered that when Columbus Field does flood, (there’s) not a whole lot there to damage, and then it just goes back out again” she said. “It’s kind of like a little pressure valve that’s being used in that way.”

Boucher said no other areas in the town were affected.

She said it was a good winter overall, so they’ll have a surplus from their winter maintenance budget, which they can use elsewhere.
