Municipal officials cover Antigonish Arena deficit

Antigonish town and county officials have paid off the Antigonish Arena‘s $100,000 deficit.

The Arena is owned by the town and county; officials from each municipal unit will put up roughly $50,000 to cover the deficit.

Laurie Boucher, the mayor of Antigonish, says it’s an accumulated deficit, and one of the reasons is a line of credit they’ve been paying interest on.

After March’s regular town council meeting Monday night, Boucher said municipal officials want to make sure they save as much money as they can so a deficit doesn’t keep popping up.

“We are in the process now of doing a study on where the money’s being spent (and) what can we do, as an arena commission, to help the leakage of money out.”

Boucher said the arena is important because it’s infrastructure that serves the Antigonish area, it’s home to various events, and it brings economic development to the region.
