Municipal officials join Strait of Canso Gateway

Richmond Co. municipal officials say they’re joining local partners to develop the entrance to Cape Breton.

Brian Marchand, the warden of the municipality, is the latest member of the Strait of Canso Gateway initiative.

He says they heard a presentation from Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, Port Hawkesbury’s mayor, on the long-term strategy to revitalize the area near the rotary in Port Hastings and short-term development to improve the Cape Breton visitor experience.

After January’s regular municipal council meeting Monday night, Marchand said their seat at the table is a chance to put a spotlight on Richmond Co. right off the Canso Causeway.

“I think the part that we could be involved in would be the Visitor Information Centre,” he said. “If we’re involved, yeah, I mean it should be a plus- if we do it right, it should be a positive for Richmond Co. tourism.”

Marchand said their decision could help direct traffic to Richmond Co.

He said he’s excited for the project.
