Richmond Co. councillors consider joint EDO

The warden of Richmond Co. says they’re interested in hiring a joint economic development officer with Port Hawkesbury.

Brian Marchand says there are a number of potential positives when it comes to partnering with town officials.

Richmond Co. municipal officials gave notice to leave the Cape Breton Regional Enterprise Network in 2019; they can’t proceed with the partnership if they leave.

After January’s regular council meeting Monday night, Marchand said the matter isn’t closed just yet.

“We’ve given notice, but just because we gave notice doesn’t mean we are leaving,” he said. “We will decide that during budget talks in the next two months.”

Marchand said there are a few areas in need of development.

He said that includes a joint Richmond-Port Hawkesbury industrial park behind Kent in Port Hawkesbury.

“There’s a development that happened there 30-plus years ago, 35 years ago, that this county was involved in, it’s curbed, paved, there’s some water/sewer services- it’s in Richmond Co., but it’s a joint park with Port Hawkesbury, (so) we want to try to develop that or get some work done there,” he said. “Also for us, for Richmond Co., our heavy industrial park, we want to try to further get some development happening in there.”

Marchand said it’s enough to give them something to think about.
