The Mulgrave Road Theatre Centre for the Arts has opened its doors after gaining their full occupancy permit the day before their first official production began.
Artistic Director Emmy Alcorn tells us they already had some sold-out shows at their For Love Nor Money performances during their soft opening a couple of weeks ago.
She explains how performers and guests love that the new building was constructed specifically for their needs and is zero carbon.
“The theatre only has 75 seats, so it’s a very intimate space. There’s not a bad seat in the house. They can hear everything. There’s no echo. People really love the small theatre,” she claims.
The address of the new Mulgrave Road Theatre Centre for the Arts is 10559 NS-16 in Guysborough.
Currently, they are hosting drama classes for children from ages eight to 14.
Becoming a travel destination
People are already travelling from across North America to attend productions at the soft opening of the Mulgrave Road Theatre Centre for the Arts.
All that’s left to create at the new building is signage, a communication system and some landscaping, according to Alcorn.
She says their guest book was signed at their performances that started on July 14.
“We had people from as far away as Arizona, the Yukon, Florida, who came, so we had a lot of local people, but we had a lot of people from away as well. So, we’re really, hoping that this building can be a destination for people, so we bring more people to Guysborough.”
Community support
Alcorn says along with being in the final phase of construction, they are also in the final phase of fundraising on their website, if you would like to contribute and have your name on their donor wall.
“I would say that we are so grateful because it. It took a lot of effort and a lot of support from a lot of people to make this happen, and we accomplished it,” she exclaims.
“It just feels amazing that we got it accomplished, but we did it with a lot of help from a lot of people, so I just want to shout out to all the people who assisted us along the way.”
Grand opening in the fall
Alcorn says her team is meeting soon to decide on the date for the official grand opening in late October or early November.
When Hollywood star and director Ethan Hawke toured the upcoming Centre last year, he told Alcorn that he’s interested in attending the grand opening.
