New operator takes control of town gym

The Port Hawkesbury Civic Centre Fitness Centre has new management.

Town officials said BODY ‘N’ SOUL+ reps would take control of the facility in a December announcement; that officially happened Jan. 1.

After January’s regular town council meeting Tuesday night, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton, the mayor of Port Hawkesbury, said it’s great for the area.

“We hope that they will be hugely successful in the years to come, and that citizens of the town and surrounding region will support them,” she said. “That (way), we can have a perfectly viable and sustainable fitness centre.”

Town officials had been running the facility since YMCA reps pulled out in February.

Chisholm-Beaton said she’s excited to learn what a new private operator can do.

“(They) will potentially be looking at programming and doing all sorts of think-outside-the-box things for that fitness facility,” she said. “It’s really exciting, and we’d like to support the launch of that new business.”

Chisholm-Beaton said a private operator takes the financial, management and staffing burden off the shoulders of town officials.
