New StFX president says first order of business is getting to know community

The incoming president of StFX says he’s excited to get to know the university community, and Antigonish as a whole.

Andy Hakin officially starts his presidency July 1; he was on campus for a meet-and-greet with students and staff members Monday.

He currently serves as vice-president (academic) at the University of Lethbridge in Alberta.

Hakin tells The Hawk StFX’s passion for liberal arts education was a real draw for him.

“StFX is one of the iconic Canadian universities,” he says. “I’ve been watching from afar for a number of years, watching how it’s developed.”

Hakin says StFX is a destination university, and he has experience with that from his time at Lethbridge.

He says he plans to focus on academic programing in his first 5-year term, since that programming is the currency of any university.
