Nova Scotia is expanding its industrial air quality rules, with the number of regulated pollutants increasing from six to 26 starting June 1.
The province says the updated Air Quality Regulations are the first major overhaul since 1995.
The changes set new limits under the Environment Act on the amount and type of pollution industries can release.
That includes substances such as benzene, mercury, sulphur dioxide, ammonia, arsenic, carbon monoxide and fine particles.
Industrial facilities such as power plants, manufacturing plants, mines and quarries are among the operations covered under the rules.
Environment and Climate Change Minister Timothy Halman says the update is aimed at keeping environmental protections current while supporting economic growth.
The province says reducing industrial air pollution can improve health outcomes, lower healthcare pressures, and encourage cleaner operations.
Officials also say the new rules should make expectations clearer for companies that need environmental approvals.
