Christopher ‘Chris’ Lloyd Lawrence

July 23, 1966 – April 8, 2026

Christopher ‘Chris’ Lloyd Lawrence passed away peacefully in his sleep at his home in White Head on April 8, 2026.

Born in Halifax to the late Sam and Sheila Lawrence, Chris was a man of profound intellect, quiet patience, and a devotion to his family and the natural world. Chris’s academic journey took him from St. Francis Xavier University to Memorial University of Newfoundland for a Master’s degree with honours in Marine Biology.  Later he pursued a 1st Class Marine Engineering certificate from NSCC eventually leading to a distinguished career as a Chief Engineer for Atlantic Towing. He was a master of his craft, and he always returned from the boats with many stories from his time at sea. While Chris was an expert on the water, his true life’s work was at home. As a father, he made sure his son, Rayden, knew every day that he was the center of his world and his greatest source of pride. Chris loved nothing more than spending his time playing board games, watching cartoons, and fostering creativity with his son. Chris was also passionate about sports – particularly golf and curling – but he was just as happy at home with Rayden playing arcade classics such as Dig Dug, Pac-Man, Smash TV, Total Carnage, or the odd round of Mario Golf.

Chris had a profound kindness for all living things. A lifelong cat lover, his compassion extended to the wildlife on his property; he was a dedicated caretaker to the hummingbirds at his feeders and the wild rabbits that frequented his yard. Though he didn’t consider himself an artist, Chris found peace in the patient craft of latch hook rugs. His home remains a gallery of this dedication, filled with over 35 completed and in-progress rugs. Whether he was tending his garden with music blaring or teaching himself a new skill, Chris lived with a quiet, capable strength.

Chris is survived by his son, Rayden Lawrence of Dartmouth; his Aunts and Uncles: Elaine Bushell (Stephen), Brent MacKinnon (Marie) both of Truro; Jane and Merrill Lawrence of Harbour Breton NL; his niece, Sarah Lumsden of Halifax; and a large extended family of cousins and friends. He was predeceased by his parents, Sam and Sheila Lawrence of Canso and his brother, Brent Lawrence of Queensport. Though his immediate family was small, he was richly surrounded by close friends who became his chosen family. He will be deeply missed by Darren “Smurf”, Brian “Boomer”, and Shawn, all of Whitehead, as well as Gonzalo and Rayna of Fox Island, who stood by him with friendship, loyalty, care and an occasional, low stakes, high enjoyment game of darts or cards.

Chris will be remembered as a talented engineer, a gentle soul, and a father with a love for connection and shared memories. To honour his deep appreciation for the natural world, donations in his memory may be made to the Canadian Wildlife Federation, the Nature Conservancy of Canada, or another nature and wildlife organization close to your heart. Service Details: A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, April 18th at 1pm at the Shamrock Club for all friends and family. A private family burial will follow at All Saints Anglican Cemetery in Canso.  Words of comfort mat be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
