St. Peter’s, NS
It is with deep sadness that the family of John Keats announce his passing on Sunday, June 7, 2026, at Richmond Villa, with his children and sister Norma by his side.
Born and raised in Grand Greve, Nova Scotia, on September 29, 1949, John was the son of the late Frank and Edith Lafford. From an early age, he developed the incredible work ethic that would define his life, learning the value of hard work, kindness, and helping others from his parents.
John is survived by his loving daughter, Jennifer Joseph (Ken Genova), and son, John Lafford, both of Grand Island, New York. He also leaves behind his cherished grandchildren, Kristina and Jacob Joseph, who were the pride and joy of his life. John never missed an opportunity to speak proudly of their accomplishments, whether watching Kristina perform on stage or cheering Jacob on at football games. Some of his most treasured memories were made with family around campfires at his summer trailer park, sharing songs, laughter, and dances under the stars.
John is also survived by his siblings: Justin Lafford, George Lafford, Beverly Lafford (Danny Campbell), Christy Gardner (Terry), Winnie Wickwire (David), Brenda Lafford, Nick Lafford, Norma Smith (Val), Lloyd Lafford, and Byron Lafford (Darlene), as well as many cousins, nieces, nephews, extended family members, and dear friends.
Besides his parents, John was predeceased by his former wife, Nancy Lafford, and his sister, Francis Coprez.
John began his professional career after moving to Hamilton, Ontario, where he worked at Canada Pipe. He later moved to Grand Island, New York, with his then-wife Nancy, where they raised their family. Eventually returning to Hamilton, he completed his career and retired from Alfa Paper Products. No matter where life took him, John remained a dedicated worker who was happiest when helping others and keeping busy.
During the summers, John could often be found at his trailer, surrounded by friends, attending dances, making memories, and collecting stories that he would happily share for years afterward. Retirement brought him back to the place he loved most—Cape Breton. Fulfilling a lifelong dream, John returned home and settled in L’Ardoise, where he and his son, Johnny created a beautiful home together. His favorite place was the sun porch overlooking the ocean, where he spent countless peaceful hours taking in the view and appreciating the beauty around him.
John had a deep love for nature. He enjoyed being outdoors, tending his vegetable gardens, and caring for animals, especially dogs. When he wasn’t working on a project or lending a helping hand to a friend or family member, he could often be found singing, dancing, listening to his beloved Bob Dylan, and enjoying an ice-cold Pepsi.
He shared a special bond with his older brother Justin and treasured time spent fishing with his cousin and best friend, Alex Sampson. John’s many life experiences made him a gifted storyteller, captivating anyone fortunate enough to listen. His stories, humor, and personality will be remembered by all who knew him.
More than anything, John was a grateful man. He appreciated every day, every experience, and every person who came into his life. He never missed an opportunity to express his gratitude and love to those around him. Even through life’s challenges, he remained thankful for the blessings God had given him and found joy in the simple things.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the caregivers and staff of Richmond Villa, where John spent the final two years of his life. Their exceptional care, compassion, and family-like atmosphere brought him comfort and happiness, and for that, they will always be grateful.
John’s legacy of hard work, kindness, gratitude, and love for family will live on in the hearts of all who knew and loved him.
A graveside service will be held 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2026 in St. Peter’s Parish Cemetery with Father John Yake officiating. All are welcome.
Funeral arrangements are under the care and direction of Dennis Haverstock Funeral Home, 26 Centennial St., St Peter’s. Words of comfort may be forwarded to the family at: www.haverstocks.com
