Marilyn Joyce Jones

It is with love and heavy hearts that the family announces the passing of Marilyn Joyce Jones of Port Hawkesbury at the Strait Richmond Hospital on May 18, 2026.

Born and raised in Glace Bay, Marilyn was the daughter of the late Donald “Fergie” Ferguson and Mary (Smith) Ferguson. She grew up surrounded by close family and strong community ties that remained with her throughout her life. She was known for her warmth and quiet kindness, always making time for others.

Marilyn shared a long and devoted marriage with her husband, the late Daniel MacKenzie “Kenzie” Jones. Together, they built a life in Port Hawkesbury rooted in family, friendships, and community until his passing in 2018.  She is lovingly remembered by her children, Rebecca and Jay (South Pasadena, FL).

She was predeceased by her brother, Brian Ferguson, and is survived by her aunt, Shirley Appleton of Glace Bay, along with many Ferguson and Smith cousins by the dozens.

Marilyn enjoyed the love of learning and music, and the joy they brought to the world.  After attending Nova Scotia Teachers College, she began her career while completing her Bachelor of Education and Arts at St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish. She taught in Port Hawkesbury for over 30 years and was a respected and much loved teacher who influenced many students.  She also shared her love of music with her church community, playing organ and conducting choirs at Holy Trinity Church, where her contributions were deeply appreciated.

In retirement, Marilyn enjoyed time at their Florida home, travelling, cruises, gardening and, most of all, being with family and friends. Marilyn will be remembered for her kindness, quiet strength, and the lasting impact she had on her family, her students, and her community.

Visitation will be held at Holy Trinity Church in Port Hawkesbury at 12:00 – 1:45 p.m. followed by funeral services starting at 2:00 p.m. on May 22, 2026.  The service will be officiated by Reverend Darlene Jewers, with a reception to follow at the church hall.
