Port Hilford, Guysborough Co. chosen for whale sanctuary

A community in the Quad Counties has been selected for North America’s first sanctuary for captive whales.

Officials with the Whale Sanctuary Project have chosen Port Hilford, located southeast of Sherbrooke, for a permanent seaside home for whales retired from marine parks.

Plans for the sanctuary include a visitor centre, a nature trail and viewing spots.

Project reps say funding for its creation and operation will be through private donations.

They say they hope to be ready to receive whales by the end of 2021.
