Prosper elected AFN regional chief

The head of a local First Nation has a new regional role.

Paul Prosper, the chief of the Paqtnkek Mi’kmaw Nation in Antigonish Co., has been elected Nova Scotia-Newfoundland regional chief of the Assembly of First Nations.

Nominations for the position closed in February; COVID-19 meant the process was put on hold.

Prosper was elected after four candidates presented at a nomination meeting Thursday; it’s a three-year term.

He replaces Morley Googoo, the former chief of the We’koqma’q First Nation who held the role for eight years, but was removed in response to bullying accusations in October.
