Port Hawkesbury’s active transportation trail has gotten a boost from the province.
Energy and Mines Minister Derek Mombourquette announced $100,000 in provincial funding through the Connect2 program on Tuesday.
The money is earmarked for the Destination Reeves Street project’s active transportation trail between NSCC and Pitt Street.
Mombouquette said Destination Reeves Street is exactly the kind of project the province likes to fund.
“It’s part of that active living that we want to promote, and also our carbon reduction as well,” he said. “These projects have been very successful in other communities; this is a fantastic project. For me, it’s transforming the community, of course we want to support it.”
Mombouquette said the active transportation trail will improve walkability and aligns with their carbon reduction strategy.
He said Connect2 and Destination Reeves Street are a natural fit.
Mombouquette said the active transportation trail isn’t just good for students.
“Not only is it a great opportunity for students to get into town and move around, but it’s also an opportunity for folks just to get out and go for a walk,” he says. “Once this is all complete, once people really catch on to what we’re doing, I think we’ll see the entire community using it.”
Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton spoke at the announcement as well.
Afterward, she said they’ll use the money to pave, add beautification measures, and install benches at rest stops.
