Provincial officials have rejected a request for three new crosswalks in Antigonish Co.
Councillors asked for crosswalks on South River Rd. near Trendy’s and Trinity Lane, as well as on Hwy. 316 in St. Andrews.
After February’s regular municipal council meeting Tuesday night, Owen McCarron, the municipality’s warden, said they’ll keep pushing.
“We’re a bit disappointed for sure, but we’re going to continue,” he said. “Each year, we’ll see and monitor traffic volumes in those areas, and if we can get them in the future, that’s certainly our hope.”
McCarron represents the St. Andrews area as part of District 6.
He said a crosswalk would have helped improve safety in the community.
“We have a seniors’ facility right there- we also have a fairly good-sized consolidated school as well, and a subdivision just below MacDonald’s Convenience,” he said. “Having a crosswalk there would certainly facilitate safe passage and crossing for students and adults alike.”
McCarron said they made the request to TIR officials in the fall.
He said they heard their response within the last few weeks.
