Richard Wood: Prince Edward Island’s fiery ambassador of Celtic music

When you ask East Coasters about the most electrifying live performers, the name Richard Wood inevitably comes to mind. For more than three decades, the Prince Edward Island fiddler has captivated audiences around the world with his high-energy performances, masterful musicianship, and deep commitment to preserving and celebrating Celtic traditions.

A five-time East Coast Music Award winner and multiple Music PEI Award recipient, Richard Wood has become one of Atlantic Canada’s most recognized musical ambassadors. His remarkable career has taken him from community halls in Prince Edward Island to some of the world’s most prestigious stages, including Carnegie Hall, Lincoln Center, the Kennedy Center, and Disney World’s EPCOT. Along the way, he has performed on national and international television programs including Good Morning AmericaThe Late Show with David LettermanUp Home Tonight, and Rita & Friends.

Born and raised on Prince Edward Island, Richard developed a passion for traditional music and step dancing at an early age. His exceptional talent quickly became evident as he captured major fiddling and step-dancing championships while still a teenager. He won the prestigious Don Messer Trophy after only a short time studying the fiddle and would later claim the award a second time, establishing himself as one of the region’s most promising young performers.

Throughout his career, Richard has shared stages with some of the biggest names in Canadian and Celtic music, including The Chieftains, Rita MacNeil, The Barra MacNeils, Ron Hynes, The Rankin Family, and Shania Twain. His performances have entertained royalty, world leaders, and dignitaries, including Queen Elizabeth II, King Charles III, Princess Diana, and the Emperor of Japan. Yet among the experiences he treasures most are performances for Canadian Armed Forces personnel in Bosnia, Afghanistan, and even the North Pole.

Richard’s musical catalogue spans more than three decades and includes acclaimed recordings such as UnbrokenA Change of ReasonsInfectiousCome Dance With MeFire Dance, and The Celtic Touch. His 2018 album Unbroken earned widespread praise and further cemented his reputation as one of Canada’s premier Celtic artists.

In recognition of his impact on East Coast music, he received the prestigious Stompin’ Tom Connors Award at the East Coast Music Awards, honouring his long-standing contributions to the culture and musical heritage of Atlantic Canada.

In 2026, audiences can experience his newest production, Richard Wood: Through the Years, a special retrospective concert celebrating the highlights of his extraordinary career. The show combines live music, storytelling, archival footage, and performances by longtime musical collaborators Kimberley Holmes, Skip Holmes, Brent Chaisson, and guest dancers. The production is scheduled for August 7, 2026, at Harbourfront Theatre in Summerside, Prince Edward Island.

This summer, Richard is also featured as part of Prince Edward Island’s Festival of Small Halls. Upcoming performances include Fiddler’s Green on June 16 in Fort Augustus and Richard Wood & Friends on June 17 in Clyde River, where audiences can enjoy an intimate evening of traditional and contemporary Celtic music.

Few artists have done more to showcase Prince Edward Island and Atlantic Canadian culture on the world stage than Richard Wood. His fiery fiddle playing, infectious energy, and genuine love for traditional music continue to inspire audiences of all ages.

Today, Richard Wood continues to balance international touring, recording, mentorship, and event production while remaining deeply connected to his Prince Edward Island roots. Through performances, workshops, and initiatives such as Fiddle FANDEMONIUM, he is helping ensure that Atlantic Canada’s fiddle traditions remain vibrant for future generations.
