Richmond Co. accepts Port Hawkesbury fire services for Point Tupper

Richmond county has agreed to make Port Hawkesbury the first responder to fires in Point Tupper.

At June’s Regular Richmond County Municipal Council Meeting, council voted to sign a memorandum of understanding accepting the coverage and to agreeing to pay the Town of Port Hawkesbury $49,645.

After the meeting Warden Brian Marchand said it was the best option.

“The best situation was having the Town of Port Hawkesbury fire department respond as first responder,” he said. “And if they need any additional help then they would contact, through mutual aid, other fire departments.”

Marchand said the key factor in the decision was response time.

“The Louisdale fire department was providing it for the past 2 or 3 years, and they decided they couldn’t do it anymore, based on time.”

He said the one-year contract will take effect July 15 and run through until July 14, 2020.
