Spaceport proponents remain positive- warden

Guysborough‘s warden says the developers of a proposed spaceport near Canso are pushing ahead.

Maritime Launch Services Ltd. reps submitted their proposal for environmental assessment in July 2018; government experts raised environmental concerns in documents that highlighted numerous questions regarding the project the next month.

After March’s regular municipal council meeting Wednesday afternoon, Vernon Pitts, the warden of the municipality, said the proponents had an open house in Canso recently, and they remain positive.

“They made some filings with the province- their open house in Canso, I believe, they had in excess of 100 people in attendance there,” he said. “We’d like to see this continue to move forward- we as a municipality, we’d like to see the province and maybe the feds having a closer second look at this.”

Company reps originally said they would start construction by the end of 2018, with the first rocket launch in 2021.

Pitts said they hope to have some sort of announcement in July 2019, but things remain fluid, and timelines change.
