Suspect arrested in Port Hawkesbury store sex assault had access to children

RCMP have arrested a man in relation to a sexual assault on a child at a Port Hawkesbury business.

On Tuesday, Inverness District RCMP arrested James Darren Peters, 49, of Lower L’Ardoise on two counts of Enticing a Child from a Parent, Sexual Interference, Unlawful Confinement, Sexual Assault, and Assault.

They say the charges stem from an August 23 attack on a 9-year-old boy.

Police say a man approached the boy in the washroom of a store, forced him into a stall, and pulled the boy’s pants down.

They say the boy was able to get away and he immediately told a family member what happened.

Police say Peters was held in custody and appeared in Port Hawkesbury Provincial Court Thursday.

They say he was released on conditions.

RCMP say Peters had a position in the community where he had access to youth.

Police are encouraging anyone who may have been a victim to contact RCMP or Crimestoppers.
