Tax rates up in Mulgrave

Mulgrave town councillors have passed their latest budget.

Councillors approved the 2019-20 budget at June’s regular town council meeting Monday night.

The roughly $1.9 million budget includes a five per cent increase to both the town’s residential and commercial tax rates.

After the meeting, Ralph Hadley, the mayor of Mulgrave, told The Hawk he understands taxpayers may not like it.

“There is always some negative, yes- there is some, not a lot,” he said. “There was some feedback, as normal- people would say something if you had to pay more.”

Hadley said town officials faced a $100,000 loss in tax revenue from an earlier appeal.

He said that put them in a tough spot.

“It’s not an easy thing to do when you are raising taxes,” he said. “To keep the services going that we have, we had to do it.”

Hadley said it’s been 10 or 12 years since the last tax increase.

The new residential rate is $1.89/$100 of assessment, and $5.18/$100 of assessment for commercial customers.
