Three charges against Antigonish Co. man arrested after fatal crash dismissed

A man from Antigonish Co. facing four charges following a fatal crash in Porter’s Lake has had three of those charges dismissed.

RCMP say the fatal two-car collision happened on Hwy. 107 in Jan. 2018.

They say the 49-year-old driver of one car died and two others were injured.

Police say their investigation determined the safety inspection on one of the vehicles had been improperly completed, and the person who inspected the vehicle was the subject of another incident involving an improper inspection earlier that month.

Chet Bernard Chisholm, 45, of Lakevale pleaded not guilty to criminal negligence causing death, two criminal negligence causing bodily harm counts and breach of trust during an election-and-plea hearing in May.

The Crown said there was not a realistic prospect of conviction on three of the charges, and brought them forward to offer no evidence in Antigonish Provincial Court Wednesday; the judge dismissed those counts.

Chisholm is still scheduled to stand trial on the breach of trust charge Dec. 9-10.
