The mayor of Antigonish says the latest round of flooding in the town wasn’t as bad as past incidents.
Saturday’s heavy rain led to flooding in the usual problems areas of the town- specifically, the Creighton Lane Parking Lot behind the Antigonish 5¢ to $1 store.
After February’s regular town council meeting Tuesday night, Laurie Boucher, Antigonish’s mayor, said the water that did come came fast, as it usually does.
“We had one of our staff members take a look at it- everything was fine,” she said. “He went down to the east end to look at how everything was going down there, came back again to the parking lot and it was flooded, so it happens very, very quickly.”
Boucher said town officials towed five cars from the parking lot before they were damaged.
She said flooding hits their winter maintenance budget, but it’s still in good shape at this point in the season.
“Events like the flooding do take a chunk out of it, but snow has been pretty good,” she said. “We’ve been salting regularly, but because of the dip in the temperatures, we had a little bit of rain lately.”
Town officials previously dealt with other flooding, which is pictured, in the Creighton Lane area and other trouble spots in January.
