Town officials say budget planning is underway

The mayor of Antigonish says town officials are in very early stages of budget deliberations.

The town’s current 2019-20 fiscal year ends March 31.

After February’s regular town council meeting Tuesday night, Laurie Boucher, the mayor of the town, said they’re in good shape at this point.

“As of now, we should be good for sure,” she said. “I can’t guarantee anything because I can’t forecast the future, but I’d be very surprised if we went over this year.”

Boucher said planning is at the staff level right now.

“They’re gathering budgets within their departments now, and they’ll bring them forward to the CAO, and then they’ll come to council,” she said. “We’re still a few months away from that.”

Boucher said they hope to have their final budget document ready for a vote by early May.

She said it’s too early to predict what will happen with tax rates.
