Officials in the Municipality of the District of Guysborough say they’re preparing for a hearing on the proposed transfer of the Canso Electric Utility.
Municipal officials inherited the utility when Canso dropped town status and joined Guysborough in 2012.
A Utility and Review Board hearing on the proposed $1 sale to Nova Scotia Power is scheduled for Tuesday.
After October’s regular municipal council meeting Wednesday afternoon, Vernon Pitts, Guysborough’s warden, said only one person filed to speak, so the hearing will be in Halifax- instead of Canso- to save money.
“When you get the whole board journeying to whatever part of the province, you have to put them up- their lodging and their salaries,” he said. “It’s just too much of a cost.”
Pitts said the one party who wanted to speak will do so via video conferencing.
He said the municipality will be represented at the hearing.
“Our deputy CAO will be in attendance at the meeting in Halifax at the offices,” he said. “We expect it’ll be smooth sailing.”
Pitts said they expect the transfer- if approved- to take place in January.
