Warden says federal and provincial funding means water lines will be extended soon

The warden of the Antigonish Co. says funding from officials with the federal and provincial governments will make it possible for them to extend water lines across the municipality.

Owen McCarron says the next step is to issue a tender for the roughly $1 million project as soon as possible following Friday’s funding announcement.

McCarron says the cost was too high for them to tackle the project alone.

“Without this money, projects like this probably wouldn’t happen- it’s just the cost of some of those projects would be such that we couldn’t probably do it on our own,” he says. “You need to have that kind of commitment from both the province and the federal governments to make projects like this a reality.”

McCarron says their plan for the project is to extend water lines two-and-a-half kilometres in North Grant and from Church St. to Beech Hill.

He says it’s important work to grow the county.

“It’s important when we’re trying to demonstrate the growth of Antigonish Co.,” he says. “Having a good, reliable water source encourages and makes growing Antigonish a little easier.”

McCarron says they’d like to have shovels in the ground in the fall, and have construction completed by the end of 2019.
