Warden says sanctuary great for whales and the community

A local bay will soon become a sanctuary for captive whales, and the municipality’s warden says he sees the potential for it to be a great boon for tourism in the area.

District of Saint Mary’s Warden Michael Mosher says he’s excited to see work at Port Hilford begin.

Mosher tells The Hawk it’s uncharted territory, but it’s still an excellent opportunity.

“There’s not a blueprint to follow,” he says. “We’ll have to work along with it and hopefully make it as good as it could possibly be. It’s a win-win situation, I think, for everybody.”

Mosher says whale sanctuary reps have been working closely with community groups, including area fisherman.

He says it’s an honour to be chosen as the site for the world’s first seaside captive whale sanctuary.

The site is set to be ready for whales by the end of 2021.
