First Nation gets provincial funding for cultural projects

A local First Nation is getting $10,000 in provincial spending for a research project.

It’s on the legend of Kluskap and the Beaver.

Potlotek Cultural Coordinator Noelle Doucette says the project will help them to continue to keep the Kluskap legends alive.

“Legends that live in the rock and landscape formations around us,” she says. “It deepens our relationship with our neighbours in St. Peters and Battery Park as we work to together to share Mi’kmaw history with visitors from near and far. Working together to research and share stories from this land strengthens our collective community pride in Unama’ki.”

The First Nation is also getting $5,800 for “Keeping it Tradish,” a weekly youth evening.

The money is part of $50,800 the province is putting up, through the Department of Culture, Communities, and Heritage, to support Mi’kmaw cultural projects.
