Municipal officials in Antigonish Co. say they’ve received a letter outlining concerns with the process to build the new Antigonish Farmers’ Market.
Market board members decided to sole source the construction of their new, year-round facility on the exhibition grounds on James St., rather than issuing a request for proposals; Antigonish Co. officials provided $200,000 for the $1.4 million project.
After January’s regular municipal council meeting Monday night, Owen McCarron, the municipality’s warden, said the owner of KV Electrical sent municipal officials a letter with his concerns about the lack of a tender process.
“That’s something that we’ll be mindful of as we go forward when we give money to organizations,” he said. “(We’ll) make sure that, if it exceeds the thresholds for tendering, the money will be (given) based on projects being tendered.”
McCarron said they heard concerns before, and they had calls on the matter, but this was the first letter they received.
Antigonish town officials provided $150,000 for the project; officials with the federal government gave $700,000.
