A local town has laid out a $3 million extension plan for active transportation in the community.
Council approved the Connect Port Hawkesbury and Beyond Project plan at a special meeting Jan. 25.
After February’s regular council meeting Tuesday night, Brenda Chisholm-Beaton told The Hawk the five-year plan would see improved accessible paths between residential and commercial areas of town.
“We do know that active transportation, multimodal connections, is extremely important,” she said. “We’re really excited about the project and we definitely want to be a walkable and accessible community for everyone.”
Chisholm-Beaton said the 2021-2022 phase of the project has proposed engineering work on the Tamarac Off-Road Connection, MacQuarrie Drive Extension, and the first part of the Waterfront Connection.
She said, under the plan, construction on the Tamarac Off-Road Connection would begin that same year.
Chisholm-Beaton said it is an important step forward for the town.
“To be walkable and accessible for all ages and all abilities,” she said. “We want every part of our town to be connected in a way that accommodates people in all the ways they move.”
Chisholm-Beaton said councillors committed $800,000, which allows them to apply through the Investing in Canada Infrastructure Program for the rest of the funds.
The motion is contingent on receiving funding through ICIP.
