Port Hawkesbury Mayor says TIR interested in gateway project

Port Hawkesbury’s mayor says now is the right time to be talking about the Cape Breton Gateway Project.

Brenda Chisholm-Beaton says Transportation Minister and Guysborough-Eastern Shore-Tracadie MLA Lloyd Hines told her the Port Hastings rotary is potentially in line for $5 million in renovations within the next five years, and TIR is willing to partner on development in the surrounding area.

After Tuesday’s regular council meeting, Chisholm-Beaton said the Canso Causeway Gateway is the first step.

“It’s a primary gateway, we’re seeing the bulk of the traffic entering the island at that primary gateway, and we just see the stars aligning at this point in time to seek out a broader project.”

Chisholm-Beaton said they’ll be looking to ports and airports in the project’s next phase.
