Port Hawkesbury ramping-up doctor recruitment

A recent funding announcement for doctor recruitment in Antigonish has Port Hawkesbury officials thinking about how they could use provincial funding.

Mayor Brenda Chisholm-Beaton says they’re working on a healthcare professional recruitment committee.

And she says they’ll be applying for the same funding stream, Healthy Communities, that saw the Saint Martha’s Regional Hospital Foundation receive $10,000.

After Monday’s regular council meeting, Chisholm-Beaton said she sees healthcare professional recruitment as a responsibility for all area governments.

“It really is a regional endeavour, so I know that we did learn about that opportunity for funding for doctor recruitment, and we most certainly will put forward an application,” she said. “But, I really do feel like it would be advantageous to have our partnering municipalities look at ways we can coordinate and collaborate.”

Chisholm-Beaton said bringing a new doctor or healthcare professional to any community in the Strait Area is good for the rest.
